Finding Health Insurance if you are Over 50

So you’re over 50 years old and living without health insurance? That can be a difficult situation as you’re still 15 years short of Medicare and will have a tough time to getting coverage at a reasonable price. It’s also a time period where many people begin to experience the aches and pains that have been building over the first half of their life. Most health care providers see people in the over 50 range as risky and they’re under no obligation to even let you get insurance. Don’t fret just yet though; there may be some things you can do to get health insurance even if you’re over 50.

Health Insurance Advice

  • First and foremost, if you have health insurance now don’t drop it. When you’re over 50, the two main places health insurance will come from is your job or through a spouse. By dropping your coverage, you may not even be able to find another company to insure you, let alone at a better rate.
  • If you’re struggling to find a quality health insurance plan, consider starting up your own small business and insuring yourself through it. Under federal law, businesses with two to fifty employees are HIPAA eligible (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Some states have different laws in regards to how much money the business must make and if the enterprise must be incorporated, but some people have used selling items on eBay as their business. It may be somewhat expensive, but this could be your only option.
  • About half of the states in the country offer what is referred to as high-risk pools. High-risk pools basically spread out the cost of insurance among all of the different companies offering insurance within the state. You’ll want to see if your state offers it and at what price as some can be very expensive.
  • If you can’t open your own business and your state doesn’t have high-risk pools, find out if your state offers any programs for the medically insurable. These are usually a last resort as the programs don’t offer great coverage and can be overly expensive.
