Is Pet Insurance for Real?

Love your pets? I’m sure you do, we all feel a special bond with our pets, whether it’s cats, dogs, birds, or just about anything else. We don’t like seeing them in pain, we grieve when they eventually pass on, and we cherish our memories of them forever - in a lot of ways, they really are members of the family. So it should come as no surprise that we’re seeing more and more people take out pet insurance for their animals. With veterinarian fees skyrocketing in the past several years, it should come as no surprise that pet insurance is very much for real. Pet insurance is clearly an industry on the rise, as seen by the nearly $250 million dollars in revenue it received in 2007. It’s really poised to break out in 2008 with well known companies beginning to offer pet insurance, brands like Purina Care and the American Kennel Club. If you haven’t noticed them already, expect to see advertisements and even the ability to purchase pet insurance at your local supermarkets and veterinarian’s offices. After finding out just how real pet insurance really is, are you interested in getting that peace of mind for your animals? Here’s what you need to know about pet insurance before you apply.

What You Should Know About Pet Insurance

  • The big question for most people remains - do you really need pet insurance? The answer is certainly debatable and really comes down to each owner. If your animal is generally healthy and you have the money to cover any expense procedures it may need, then you can probably live with out it. If you have a purebred show dog with a history of health problems, maybe the cost of insurance is well worth the security.
  • Know exactly what a pet insurance plan has to offer before buying it. Pet insurance works like any other forms of insurance and it may only cover certain things and have limits as to how much. Also like normal insurance, the cost will probably rise significantly as your pet gets older.
  • If possible, you should try to insure your pet as early as you can. Like previously stated, insurance premiums only get more expensive as your pet ages. But your pet may also be ineligible for insurance if it is a certain age or has developed any long term health problems.
