Filing a Property Loss Claim

In the unlikely event that you will ever need to call on your property insurance policy to file a claim for damage to your home or land - or even for someone hurt on your property, you will want to have been prepared for the process. Filing an insurance claim leads to an investigation almost every time it happens, and this investigation could be cursory or extremely detailed, depending upon your claim and the circumstances surrounding it.

Preparation Tips:

In order to be prepared to have as smooth and quick an investigation as possible before you end up needing to file a property loss claim, you should consider very carefully the things that the insurance company is going to want to know before your claim is approved. Typically these will follow the traditional W’s:

  • Who is involved in the incident that caused the claim?
  • What specifically happened in the events surrounding your claim?
  • When did this happen?
  • Where did this event happen?

Answering these questions quickly, effectively and with hard facts is the quickest way to a settled claim in your favor. Some of the things you can do to help answer these questions include:

  • Keep receipts for the cost of any improvements to your home or property
  • Take pictures - LOTS of pictures of your property in various places and at different angles. If you make any changes or improvements to your land, take pictures of the process and the finished product.
  • Take precautions to help prevent a loss on your property, such as installing floodlights to deter thieves, and cutting down or removing trees and branches that are damaged and may fall and hurt other property or people.

Taking sensible precautions to prepare to prove the value of your claim and the previous condition of your property before filing is the key to a short and successful investigation that could save you plenty of time and headache. From lightning damage, to falling trees, fires, or injuries on your property, the more information you have to present to the insurance company, the more likely that your claim will go over smoothly and quickly.
