Health Care in Massachusetts

A minuteman statue depicted on the Massachusetts...

Massachusetts likes to think that it is setting new standards in the way that health care is handled. With the health care system we have these days in America there are always people who are looking for new ways to improve it, and change it for the better. Massachusetts might just be doing that. The following are some of the ways that health care is handled in Massachusetts and how it might have an effect on the rest of the country. You never know who will develop the best health care plan, so until then it is important that everybody has their say. Who knows, you might even be able to help out.

The Current Stats

On tax forms for the year 2007, 95% of Massachusetts tax payers noted that they are covered by health insurance. In the state that means that there were about 86,000 tax filers who were not covered at any point by insurance. Those who are not covered could not take advantage of their insurance exemption and were also fined a certain tax penalty. This is because in 2006 there was a law passed that stated every Massachusetts resident must have some sort of health insurance. Failure to comply was punishable by the law.

Could This Have an Effect?

Other states might follow this lead if it is shown to be effective over a certain length of time. Some question the idea that not having health insurance could be punishable by law, while sympathizers say that health insurance is so important that people must be made to have it. We might not see a national effect take place with this type of law for a few years, while it is entirely possible that other states may amend this law to make it fit differently. You can bet though that if it is successfully that there will be copycats who follow.

What Can You Do?

If you live in Massachusetts then you must follow the rules and get some health care. If you do not agree with the law then write to those in your state government and explain your dissatisfaction. Residents of other states should also write their state government and explain why they believe or do not believe the Massachusetts law is a good idea. Health insurance is something that will affect us all. We need to make sure that our government listens to our concerns. If you have an idea then make sure it is heard by the relevant parties.
