Who is CLUE and What Do They Do?

Very few people in the country have any real awareness of CLUE and what affect it may have had on their lives already. CLUE is a database of insurance claims and information on individual consumers much like a credit score. In fact, the information in a CLUE report is largely based upon your credit score. So if you have been summarily denied coverage for that fancy new BMW you wanted, or had coverage for your home revoked, your CLUE report may have been the culprit.

CLUE Reports

The CLUE database enables homeowner and automobile insurers to exchange information - without notice to you unless your state requires notice- about claims for loss of property. Here’s a simple example of how the exchange system works:

  • Insurance companies give information about property loss claims and even inquiries for coverage into the database.
  • When you file a claim for loss on an auto or homeowner’s policy, they put information about the claim and its resolution into the database.
  • Other Insurance companies are able to make inquiries to CLUE about your past insurance or claim history at any time unless prohibited by state law.

Can I See My Clue Score?

When it comes to the CLUE report, you essentially have the same rights you do with your credit report:

  • You can get a free copy of your CLUE report and insurance score once per year
  • An insurance company must notify you if it intends to take an “adverse action” based on information in your CLUE report, such as denying you a policy.
  • If you are denied insurance or if your policy is cancelled, you are entitled to a free copy of your CLUE report.
  • If you check your report and find inaccurate information, you have the right to dispute the information in writing. The agency providing the CLUE report must investigate all disputes.

CLUE Reports are not the only Insurance Scoring/Reporting Agency around either. There is a lesser company known as A PLUS that also maintains a database for insurance claims and reporting information as well.
